Calling all DIY wedding brides and grooms!

Everyone knows the Oriental Trading store, the source for inexpensive party favors and decorations. They have everything from embroidered sombreros for your Cinco de Mayo party to tableware for your graduation party. You can get sucked in perusing their site as you try to imagine what you could do with farm-themed treat bags or a dozen jump ropes.

I recently received their wedding catalog (“ Everything from ‘Will you?’ to ‘I do!’”), unsolicited. If you are having a DIY wedding, this is the catalog for you! They have elegant items like rolls of tulle for decorating chair backs (in eighteen colors), antique-looking accessories for a vintage-style wedding reception, or more casual options such as paper lantern globes (in nineteen solid and fifteen striped colors!).

For the wedding ceremony there are unity candle sets, plain or personalized, pew clips and flower balls, rose or cherry blossom “petals”, runners, sand ceremony options for couples and for blended families which, again, can be personalized, and memorial candles and vases.  They even have adorable ideas for the ring bearers and flower girl such as a suitcase labeled “ring security” and signs that say “Here comes the bride” and “It’s party time!”

Reception supplies include tablecloths (twenty-two color options), party fountains for champagne or chocolate, cupcake and macaron racks, cake cutters, champagne flutes and yes, shot glasses. Plus there are ten pages with sweets and ways to serve them on a candy buffet.

Some of the decorations are on the cheesy side, but could be fun for a photo booth area: boas and Mardi Gras masks, neon gangster hats and sunglasses, sequin bowties and other props. The favors are probably not things your guests will cherish like golf tees or pencils with the newlyweds’ names on them. And you might want to buy your bridesmaids and groomsmen gifts that aren’t from Oriental Trading. But the activity sets for kids who are at the reception are a good idea.

Oriental Trading did not ask me to review their catalog and, as I said, I didn’t even ask for it to be sent. But I was thoroughly impressed with their ideas and inspiration as well as the value. I’m going to hang on to the catalog for holiday and party decorations. They have some cute little milk bottles (only $16 a dozen) that I’m sure I can make a fun craft with to give as Christmas gifts.
